“How long will my pool be out of action?” is the first question almost every client asks, and it is a fair one. A fibreglass reline is not a weekend job, but it is a lot faster than most people expect. Here is the honest timeline, stage by stage, based on pools we have actually relined across Cape Town.
How long does a fibreglass pool reline take? 2 to 5 days on site
For a standard domestic pool in sound condition, budget 2 to 5 working days from arrival to a pool that is ready to fill. Our own recent jobs bracket that range neatly:
| Pool | Work done | Days on site |
|---|---|---|
| 6m x 3m, Table View | Loose fibre stripped, full reline | 2 days |
| 7m x 4m, Durbanville | Gunite converted to fibreglass | 3 days |
| 10m x 5m, Kuilsriver | Gunite converted to fibreglass | A few days |
Add filling time on top. A big pool takes longer to fill than it does to line.
Fibreglass pool relining timeline: what happens day by day
Day 1 of a pool reline: drain, strip and prepare the shell
The pool is drained and the old surface comes off. On a failed fibreglass job that means stripping the loose, lifting material back to sound shell. On a gunite pool it means grinding the surface back and opening up the cracks so they can be filled properly. This is the day that decides whether the reline lasts, and it is the day most cowboys skip.

Day 2: crack repairs and fibreglass matting
Cracks get repaired, then the fibreglass matting goes on across floor, walls and steps. On a small pool this can finish in a day. On a 10×5 it runs into the next.

Day 3: blue gelcoat and finishing the pool lining
The blue gelcoat goes on. This is the layer you actually see and swim against, so it is applied carefully and evenly.

How long fibreglass takes to cure before filling the pool
The lining needs to cure before water goes near it. Rush this and you trade a few hours for a finish that blisters later. Once it is cured we start filling, and on a big pool that alone can take the better part of a day.

What makes a fibreglass pool reline take longer
- Pool size. A 10×5 is roughly double the surface area of a 6×3, and the timeline reflects that.
- How bad the old surface is. Badly lifting fibreglass or a heavily cracked gunite shell means more stripping and more repair before anything new goes on.
- Structural repairs. A bulge, a collapsed section or a failed step needs fixing first, and that is its own piece of work.
- Weather. Cold and damp slow curing down. Cape winter relines take longer than summer ones, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing.
- Access. If materials have to be carried a long way, or a crane is needed, that adds time.
How long before you can swim after a pool reline?
Once the pool is full and the water is balanced, you can swim. In practice most clients are back in the water within about a week of us arriving. We balance the water and walk you through the first few days of chemistry, because a brand new surface behaves slightly differently until it settles.
How long does fibreglass pool relining last?
Done properly, a fibreglass reline should give you 15 to 20 years. Ours carry a 10 year guarantee. The single biggest factor is the preparation on day one, which is exactly why we do not rush it. There is more detail in our guide on how long fibreglass relining lasts in the Cape climate and on the step by step relining process.
Fibreglass pool relining: frequently asked questions
How long does a fibreglass reline take on a swimming pool?
A standard domestic fibreglass pool reline takes 2 to 5 working days on site. Our 6m x 3m Table View pool took 2 days, the 7m x 4m Durbanville gunite conversion took 3 days, and the 10m x 5m Kuilsriver pool took a few days more. Filling the pool happens on top of that.
How many years does a fibreglass pool reline last?
A properly prepared fibreglass reline lasts 15 to 20 years in the Cape climate. Ours carry a 10 year guarantee. Surface preparation on day one is what decides that lifespan, which is why we never rush the strip and prep stage.
When can you swim in a newly relined pool?
Once the pool is filled and the water is balanced you can swim. In practice most clients are back in the water about a week after we arrive, allowing for curing and filling time on a full-size pool.
Can you reline a fibreglass pool in winter?
Yes, but allow longer. Cold, damp Cape winter weather slows the gelcoat cure, and we will not rush a lining to hit a date. A winter reline may add a day or two to the on-site time.
How much does fibreglass pool relining cost?
Our published benchmark is an 8m x 4m fibreglass reline at R54 000 to R60 000 all inclusive. The 10m x 5m Kuilsriver gunite conversion came to R47 983. Every pool is quoted in writing after a free on-site assessment.
Do I need to be home while my pool is being relined?
No. We need access to the pool area and a power point. Most clients carry on as normal while the work happens.
What happens to the water in my pool during a reline?
On larger pools we store the water in a bladder and return it afterwards, which saves you refilling from scratch. It is worth asking about on any pool over 50 000 litres.
Is marbelite resurfacing faster than fibreglass relining?
The application can be quicker, but marbelite needs a longer cure and careful water treatment afterwards, so the total time to swimming is similar. Compare the two on our marbelite versus fibreglass page.
