Pool cover pricing is deliberately confusing, because a R400 bubble sheet and a R20,000 solid safety cover are both sold as pool covers. They do completely different jobs. Here is what each type costs in South Africa and which one is right for a Cape Town pool.

Pool cover prices in South Africa by type

Four categories, four very different price brackets and purposes.

Solar and bubble pool cover prices

The cheapest category, sold by the square metre. A solar bubble cover floats on the water, raises temperature, and cuts evaporation and chemical loss substantially. It is not a safety device and will not hold any weight. For most Cape Town owners this is the highest-value cover per rand spent, purely on water and chemical savings.

Pool safety net prices

Mid-range. A tensioned net stops a child or pet falling in, which is the reason most families buy one. It does nothing for heat, evaporation or debris, so many owners end up running a net plus a solar cover.

Solid safety cover prices

Higher again. A PVC solid cover is a physical barrier that also blocks debris and evaporation, and it is the option that does the most jobs at once. Pricing depends on pool size, shape and fixing method.

Automatic and slatted pool cover prices

The premium bracket, often installed with a new pool because the housing is easier to build in from the start. Convenient and effective, and priced accordingly.

What changes pool cover prices

  • Pool size and shape. Freeform pools cost more than rectangles because covers are cut to template
  • Material grade. Cheap PVC fails in Cape UV within a couple of seasons
  • Fixing method. Track, anchors or roll-up stations all price differently
  • Installation. Deck type and access affect the fitting cost

Is a pool cover worth the price in Cape Town?

On water alone, usually yes. An uncovered Cape Town pool loses meaningful volume to evaporation every summer week, and every litre replaced is municipal water plus the chemicals to rebalance it. Add reduced chlorine demand, less debris, warmer water and less UV on the lining, and a cover pays for itself over a few seasons. For families with small children, the safety argument decides it regardless of price. See pool safety nets and fences and pool cover prices compared.

Pool cover prices: frequently asked questions

How much does a pool cover cost in South Africa?

It depends on type. Solar bubble covers are the cheapest and are priced per square metre, safety nets sit in the middle, solid PVC safety covers cost more again, and automatic slatted covers are the premium option. Pool size, shape and fixing method move every quote.

How much are pool covers for a standard size pool?

A rectangular pool is cheaper to cover than a freeform one of the same area, because freeform covers are cut to template. Always get the quote against your actual pool dimensions rather than a per-metre headline price.

Which pool cover is best value in Cape Town?

For most owners a solar bubble cover gives the best return per rand, because it cuts evaporation, chemical use and heating costs at the same time. If small children use the garden, a safety net or solid safety cover becomes the priority instead.

Does a pool cover actually save money?

Yes, mostly through water and chemicals. An uncovered pool loses significant volume to evaporation in a Cape summer, and replacing it means municipal water plus the chemicals to rebalance. Reduced UV on the lining extends surface life too.

What is the difference between a pool safety net and a solid pool cover?

A net is a fall-prevention barrier and nothing else. A solid cover is also a barrier but additionally blocks debris, cuts evaporation and holds heat. Nets are cheaper, solid covers do more jobs.

How long do pool covers last in the Cape sun?

Quality material lasts several seasons. Cheap PVC and thin bubble sheeting degrade quickly under Cape UV, which is why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive over five years.

Do pool covers keep a pool warm in winter?

A solar cover holds daytime heat and slows overnight loss, which extends the swimming season at both ends. It is not a heater. For genuine winter swimming you need heating, covered in our solar versus heat pump comparison.
