In this guide

Somewhere between the first blister and the relining quote, every fibreglass pool owner meets the repair kit: a tin of resin, a square of matting, a promise. We have no quarrel with the kits — we use industrial versions of the same chemistry daily. The quarrel is with what the packaging implies they can do. Here is the honest boundary between a fibreglass pool repair kit fix and a professional job, drawn by people who see both outcomes.

What a repair kit genuinely fixes

  • One isolated chip or gouge from a dropped brick or an over-enthusiastic pole — clean damage on an otherwise sound lining;
  • A single small blister on a young lining, caught early, in an accessible spot;
  • Cosmetic scrapes above the waterline where conditions are dry and prep is easy.

Done patiently — surface ground back, dried completely, laminated in thin layers, sanded fair — a kit repair on this kind of damage is legitimate and can last years. The keyword is isolated.

The honest decision rule:

  • One blister/chip, young lining: patch it — kit or pro, either is fine
  • Several blisters, spreading: water is BEHIND the laminate — patching is whack-a-mole
  • Chalky, faded, crazing surface: the lining is at end of life — reline
  • Patched twice already, failing again: stop buying kits — the substrate is talking

Why patches fail on failing linings

A fibreglass lining fails from behind: moisture migrates through or under the laminate, bonds break down, and blisters are just the visible bubbles of a hidden process. Patch the bubble and you have sealed a symptom onto a wet substrate — the process continues around your patch, which is why serial patchers meet new blisters every season. This is also why honest relining is mostly PREPARATION: stripping the failed laminate, drying the shell properly (days, not hours), grinding a mechanical key, and only then laminating — the exact discipline documented in our published Monte Vista case study, which existed precisely because someone else’s quick job had failed.

The real cost comparison

Kits run a few hundred rand; professional patch repairs are modest; a full professional reline of an 8m x 4m pool is documented in our published case study at R54,000–R60,000. That gap tempts serial patching — but count honestly: three summers of kits, water loss through failing laminate, chemicals fighting an algae-friendly rough surface, and you have funded a meaningful slice of the real job while the shell got wetter. The reline, meanwhile, resets the pool for decades. Our relining page covers the process and options in full.

If you do use a kit: the checklist

  1. Drain to below the repair and let the area dry COMPLETELY — days if needed; moisture is why patches peel;
  2. Grind back to sound laminate and feather the edges — resin over gloss is a sticker, not a repair;
  3. Thin layers, fully wetted matting, no air pockets; fair and sand before topcoat;
  4. Match the topcoat honestly — and accept the colour will be close, not identical;
  5. Photograph and date it — if it fails within two seasons, that is your substrate verdict, and the next call is a free professional assessment rather than another kit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I patch underwater with wet-set epoxy?

Emergency wet-set products exist and can slow a leak until proper repair — treat them as first aid, not surgery.

Why does my patch look darker than the pool?

Weathered gelcoat never matches fresh topcoat. Pros blend larger areas for closeness; only full relining gives uniform colour.

Is one blister worth a professional call-out?

If the lining is young, a kit is reasonable. If the pool is 15+ years old, the blister is usually a messenger — a free assessment reads the message before you spend anything.

How long does professional relining last vs patching?

A properly prepared reline is a decades-long surface. Patches on a failing lining last seasons at best — that is the entire economics in one sentence.
