A pool pump is the heart of the whole system, so when it starts screeching, tripping the earth leakage or simply refusing to prime, the green water follows fast. We repair pool pumps across Cape Town and, just as importantly, we will tell you honestly when a repair makes sense and when you are throwing good money after a motor that has had its day.

Pool pump repairs Cape Town - technician fitting new pump plumbing

Most of the pumps we see are the usual suburban workhorses — Speck, Quality, Earth and similar — running domestic pools from Durbanville down to Constantia. The failures follow patterns, and the good news is that plenty of them are a straightforward, affordable fix rather than a full replacement.

What we repair

  • Mechanical seals — the small seal behind the impeller that stops water reaching the motor. A drip under the pump is the classic warning sign, and left alone it will cook the bearings.
  • Bearings — that rising whine or grinding is worn bearings, usually cheap to replace if you catch it before the motor overheats.
  • Impellers — cracked or blocked impellers kill your flow and starve the filter. We clear or replace them and get pressure back.
  • Capacitors and windings — a pump that hums but won’t start, or trips the board, often needs a new capacitor; a burnt winding is where we talk replacement.
  • Priming and air leaks — a pump losing prime overnight usually has a suction-side leak or a perished lid o-ring rather than a dead motor.

Common signs your pump needs attention

Loud grinding or screeching when it runs; water pooling underneath the wet end; the pump struggling to prime or losing prime between cycles; weak return flow and a filter that won’t build pressure; or the motor cutting out once it gets hot. Any of these is worth a look before it escalates — a leaking seal that costs a little today becomes a seized motor that costs a lot next month.

Repair or replace? Our honest take

If the motor is sound, repairs almost always win — seals, bearings, impellers and capacitors are the bread and butter of pump servicing and cost a fraction of a new unit. Once a motor has burnt out, though, or the pump is well over ten years old and undersized for the pool, a new energy-efficient pump often pays for itself in running costs, especially with Cape Town electricity where it is. We run the numbers with you rather than defaulting to the more expensive route. Our guide to pool pump replacement costs in Cape Town sets out what a new pump runs to if that is the way it goes.

Sizing and efficiency matter here

An oversized pump on a small pool wastes power and wears itself out; an undersized one never turns the water over properly and leaves you fighting algae. When we replace a pump we size it to your pool volume and filter, and where it fits the budget we point people towards variable-speed units, which quietly slash the biggest running cost on the whole property. If the pump trouble is part of a wider tired system, it can be worth folding it into a broader pool repair or renovation.

Areas we serve

We cover the Northern Suburbs (Durbanville, Bellville, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Panorama, Monte Vista), the Southern Suburbs (Constantia, Tokai, Bergvliet), the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, the West Coast around Table View and Milnerton, and the Helderberg to Somerset West and Strand. We also help pool owners in George and the Garden Route.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my pool pump leaking water underneath?

Almost always a failed mechanical seal. It is a common, inexpensive repair — but do it promptly, because water getting into the motor is what turns a small job into a replacement.

My pump is loud but still working. Is that urgent?

A rising whine or grind means the bearings are on the way out. Replacing bearings early is cheap; ignoring it until the motor seizes is not.

How long should a pool pump last?

With decent care, eight to twelve years is realistic in the Cape. Coastal salt air and running the pump longer than needed both shorten that.

Can you supply and fit a new pump if mine is beyond repair?

Yes. We supply, correctly size and install replacement pumps, and can set you up with an energy-efficient variable-speed unit if it suits your pool.
