Pool relining cost is the number every Cape Town pool owner wants before they will pick up a phone — and the number almost no company will print. We print ours. Gibbs Pools publishes completed, photographed relining projects with the actual prices attached, so this guide can do what most cannot: give you real Rand ranges by pool size, explain exactly what moves the number, and show you the finished work behind it.

Pool relining cost Cape Town - applying a new pool surface coat

Pool relining cost in Cape Town — real published numbers:

  • 7m x 4m fibreglass reline: R28 575 — our published Edgemead project
  • 8m x 4m fibreglass reline: R54 000 – R60 000 — our published Cape Farms case study (bigger scope: full strip + extensive prep)
  • Larger and free-form pools: scale up from these benchmarks — quoted in writing after a free assessment
  • Marbelite resurfacing: generally below an equivalent fibreglass reline — shell condition decides

Pool relining cost by pool size

Surface area drives relining cost more than any other factor — you are paying for material and skilled labour across every square metre of shell. As working ranges for Cape Town fibreglass relines:

  • Plunge and splash pools (up to ~5m): the entry point — small areas, but fixed costs (setup, draining, curing) keep them from being proportionally cheap;
  • Standard family pools (6–8m): the heart of the market — our two published projects above bracket this range honestly;
  • Large pools (9m+): scale up from the 8m x 4m benchmark by area; free-form shapes add fitting time and material waste over rectangles.

What moves pool relining cost up or down

  1. Shell condition: the big one. A sound shell prices at benchmark; cracks to rout and bond, hollow render, or a saturated substrate that needs proper drying time all add honest line items — this is why real quotes follow site assessments, not phone calls;
  2. What is coming off: stripping one failed lining is standard; stripping multiple historic layers is more labour;
  3. The layup you are buying: lamination layers and resin quality separate a decades-long lining from a three-summer one — and cheap quotes usually live exactly here. Our Monte Vista case study documents redoing another contractor’s failed lining: read it before accepting the lowest number;
  4. Extras done while the pool is empty: weir re-bonding, light niches, new fittings — cheapest at this moment, itemised so you choose.

Fibreglass reline or marbelite resurface: cost logic

Marbelite resurfacing generally prices below an equivalent fibreglass reline and gives the classic finish — on a sound, dry shell it is a legitimate saving. Fibreglass costs more upfront and buys a smoother, chemically gentler surface plus a waterproofing layer that older or weep-prone gunite shells genuinely benefit from. We quote both where both are honest options; the assessment tells you which pool you own. Full options on our pool relining Cape Town page.

The pool relining cost traps to avoid

  • The un-itemised bargain: if preparation is not written down, it is not planned — and prep is where linings live or die;
  • Patching a failing lining repeatedly: serial repairs on a surface at end of life quietly fund half a real reline while the shell gets wetter;
  • December pricing: peak-season panic is the most expensive time to buy this work — winter relines cost no swimming weeks and book keener;
  • Ignoring the leak first: if the pool loses water, find the leak before sealing a new surface over an unresolved fault.

Getting your exact relining cost

Benchmarks budget it; your shell prices it. The free on-site assessment ends in a written, itemised quote — preparation detailed, materials named, guarantee stated — that you can hold against our published projects and anyone else’s promises. Wider market context lives in our Cape Town pool repairs hub.

Frequently asked questions

Why do relining quotes differ by R20 000 for the same pool?

Scope and layup — layers, resin, prep detail, what is excluded. Itemised quotes make the difference visible line by line; vague ones hide it until later.

Does relining fix a leaking pool?

Often yes — a full lining seals shell-side faults — but plumbing leaks live outside the shell. Diagnosis first, so the reline solves the right problem.

How long does a reline take and when should I book?

One to two weeks plus curing, weather depending. Winter is the professional’s season: open diaries, zero lost swimming.

Is a cheap reline ever worth it?

A cheap ITEMISED quote from a contractor with photographed completed work — possibly. A cheap vague quote — our Monte Vista rescue is what that becomes.
