In this guide

Walk into any pool shop with green water and you will walk out with algaecide — it is the reflex sale of the industry. Sometimes it is exactly right. Often it is a plaster on a problem that lives in your filter, your chemistry or your pool’s surface. As the team that gets called when the algae keeps winning anyway, here is the honest guide to pool algaecide: what it does brilliantly, and where your money is better spent.

What algaecide actually is

Chlorine is your pool’s killer; algaecide is the specialist support act. Most products are either quaternary ammonium compounds (“quats” — affordable, effective, foam if overdosed) or copper-based formulas (powerful, longer-lasting, with a staining risk worth respecting). Both work by disrupting algae cells and, crucially, by making it harder for algae to re-establish — they are better bodyguards than assassins.

Where algaecide genuinely earns its money:

  • Winter insurance under a cover, on reduced circulation
  • After a recovery, to stop the survivors regrouping
  • Holiday buffer when nobody will dose for two weeks
  • Persistent mustard algae, alongside — not instead of — proper treatment

Where algaecide wastes your money

  1. As the main weapon against a green pool. A genuine bloom needs chlorine shock, brushing and filtration running hard — pouring algaecide into pea soup is the most expensive way to feel busy. Our green pool recovery guide covers the sequence that actually works.
  2. As a substitute for filtration. If your sand bed is exhausted or channelled, algae food and spores recirculate endlessly — no chemical subscription outruns a broken filter.
  3. As a weekly habit on a healthy pool. A balanced, well-filtered pool with honest chlorine does not need routine algaecide; you are buying comfort, not chemistry.
  4. Against black algae on old marbelite. Black algae roots INTO porous surfaces. Chemicals prune it; only surface restoration evicts it — that is a resurfacing conversation, and no bottle changes that.

The copper warning

Copper algaecides are effective and long-lived precisely because copper stays in your water — and copper stains. Overdose, or run copper products in a pool topped with metal-rich borehole water, and you can turn surfaces (and blonde hair) green-black. Rules: dose exactly to label, never stack copper products, and if your fill water comes from a borehole, tell whoever advises you — it changes the recommendation. Mystery staining that will not brush out is one of the checks in our standard pool assessment.

The honest decision rule

Ask one question: is algae a rare visitor or a tenant? A rare visitor after storms or holidays — algaecide is fine insurance. A tenant that returns monthly no matter what you pour — stop buying bottles and diagnose the system, because recurring algae is always a symptom: of filtration, chemistry lock-up, or a surface at end of life. That diagnosis is free with us: book a pool assessment and we will tell you which one your pool has.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my pool foam after algaecide?

Overdosed quat-based product — harmless but annoying, and it fades over days. Dose to volume, not to anxiety.

Can I swim after adding algaecide?

Per label — most allow swimming after brief circulation at maintenance doses. Shock treatments, not the algaecide, are usually what keeps swimmers out.

What is the yellow-brown dust that keeps coming back?

Likely mustard algae — brushable, returns fast, laughs at normal chlorine. It needs a targeted protocol plus filter cleaning; worth professional eyes if a second attempt fails.

Does winter algaecide really work?

Yes — one proper dose at close-down under a cover is among the best rand-per-result purchases in pool care. It is in our winter routine for exactly that reason.

Not sure what your water needs? Our maintenance team tests before dosing – no wasted chemicals.
