Guests arriving tomorrow and the pool is green. The honest answer is that overnight is ambitious, but a dramatic improvement in 12 to 24 hours is achievable if you do the right things in the right order. Here is what actually works.
Can you really clear a green pool overnight?
Partly. You can kill the algae overnight. Turning dead algae into clear water is a filtration job, and that takes longer than one night on most domestic filters. Realistically: algae dead by morning, water visibly clearing through the day, genuinely clear in 24 to 72 hours. Anyone promising clear water by breakfast is selling something.
How to clear a green pool overnight: the fastest working method
Step 1: balance pH before you shock the pool
Bring pH down to 7.2. Shocking a pool at pH 8.0 wastes most of the chlorine you are about to add. This single step is the difference between a green pool clearing and a green pool staying green expensively.
Step 2: brush the pool walls, steps and floor
Algae attached to surfaces is shielded. Brushing puts it into suspension where chlorine can reach it. Do this before dosing, not after.
Step 3: shock the pool heavily at dusk
Dose after sunset so UV does not destroy the chlorine before it works. A green pool needs a genuine shock dose, not a routine one. Under-dosing a green pool is the most common reason it is still green in the morning.
Step 4: run the pump all night
Circulation is what carries chlorine to algae and dead algae to the filter. Run the pump continuously, not on its timer. This is not the night to save electricity.
Step 5: vacuum to waste in the morning
Dead algae settles as grey sludge. Vacuuming to waste removes it without pushing it through the filter, which is far faster than trying to filter it out.

Why a green pool will not clear overnight
- Stabiliser is too high. Above 75ppm cyanuric acid, chlorine is locked and shocking barely helps
- The filter is blinded. Matted sand means dead algae stays in the water
- You under-dosed. Routine chlorine quantities do not clear a green pool
- The pump ran on a timer. Six hours of circulation will not do it
- It is not algae. Clear green water is usually oxidised metal, and chlorine makes that worse
Clearing a green pool: frequently asked questions
How do you clear a green pool overnight?
Correct pH to about 7.2, brush all surfaces, shock heavily after sunset so UV does not burn off the chlorine, run the pump all night, then vacuum the settled dead algae to waste in the morning. Expect the algae dead by morning and the water clear over the following day or two.
How long does it really take to clear a green pool?
Algae can be killed overnight. Clearing the water is filtration work and usually takes 24 to 72 hours on a domestic filter. A blinded filter or locked-up stabiliser stops it clearing at all.
How do I clean a green pool in 24 hours?
The same sequence, with one addition: vacuum to waste rather than through the filter so the dead algae leaves the system immediately. Keep the pump running continuously throughout.
Why is my pool still green after shocking it?
Most often the pH was too high when you shocked, the dose was too small for a genuinely green pool, the stabiliser is locked high, or the filter has stopped filtering. Each one is checked in a different way.
Should I drain a green pool instead of treating it?
Rarely. Draining a pool carries real structural risk, especially with a high water table, and a fibreglass shell can move. Treat and filter instead unless the stabiliser is so high that partial dilution is genuinely needed.
Can I swim in a pool the day after shocking it?
Only once free chlorine has dropped back to a normal swimming range and the water is clear. Swimming in freshly shocked water is unpleasant and unsafe.
How do I stop my pool turning green again?
Keep pH in range, keep stabiliser below about 50ppm, run the pump long enough for your pool volume, and service the filter. Repeat greening is usually a mechanical fault rather than a chemical one.
Green pool that will not clear?
If you have done all of this and it is still green, the filter or pump is the problem. See green pool with high chlorine or book a circulation check on our pool repairs page.
