Cape Town’s south-easter has a friendly nickname and an unfriendly relationship with your pool. The Cape Doctor strips water by the centimetre, delivers half the neighbourhood’s leaves and dust, agitates chlorine into early retirement and sandblasts pump housings all summer. You cannot switch off the wind — but pools that are set up for it cost meaningfully less to run than pools in denial. Here is the wind defence playbook.

What wind actually does to a pool

The Cape Doctor’s bill, itemised:

  • Evaporation: windy weeks can strip 3–5cm+ — water AND the chemicals dissolved in it
  • Debris load: leaves, dust and sand driving baskets and filters to their limits
  • Chemistry churn: agitation + UV burns chlorine faster; dust feeds algae
  • Equipment wear: grit in bearings, sand in filter beds, corroding housings

Defence one: kill the evaporation

A floating solar blanket ends wind evaporation almost entirely — in the windy suburbs it is the single highest-return purchase in pool ownership, paying for itself in water and chemicals within a season or two. It also solves the great wind-suburb confusion: pools that seem to leak but actually evaporate. (Losing water even UNDER a blanket? Now it IS a leak — our leak detection settles it.) The cover options and prices are compared in our covers guide.

Defence two: manage the debris army

  • Windbreak planting or screens on the windward side — even partial shelter cuts debris load dramatically; solid walls beat hedges that shed;
  • Empty baskets after every blow, not every week — a packed weir basket during a three-day south-easter is how pumps end up starved;
  • Leaf nets in the drop months for tree-adjacent pools — catch the delivery before it sinks;
  • Backwash on the gauge — wind season loads filters fast; the 20–25% pressure rule from our backwashing guide self-adjusts to it.

Defence three: shelter the equipment

Pump and filter installations facing the weather age in fast-forward — wind-driven grit finds motor bearings, salt air finds everything. A ventilated equipment enclosure (ventilated being the operative word; sealed boxes cook motors) buys years of equipment life. Rust streaks at the motor vents are the early warning; our pump repair team sees the difference sheltered installations make every week.

The wind-day routine (five minutes)

  1. After any big blow: skim the load, empty both baskets;
  2. Glance at the pressure gauge — backwash if it says so;
  3. Check chlorine within a day — wind days eat sanitiser; one corrective dose beats a green surprise (the full post-storm version is in our storm guide);
  4. Top up to mid-weir — a wind-lowered level starves the pump next.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does wind evaporation really cost?

Windy-summer pools can lose their entire volume across a season to evaporation alone — thousands of litres, plus the chemicals in them. The blanket maths follows directly.

Do windbreaks cause shade problems?

Site them west and south of the pool and they block wind, not northern sun — placement is the whole art.

Why does my pool go green after every big blow?

Dust load feeding algae plus chlorine stripped by agitation — the wind-day routine above exists exactly for this.

Is the Cape Doctor bad for pool covers?

Cheap loose blankets get shredded; fitted quality covers and tensioned nets handle it fine. Buy once, anchored properly.
